Symbolism and Craft
Ishtar (Inanna) is the oldest named goddess in recorded history. Her symbols were pressed into clay tablets in Sumer over four thousand years ago, and the eight-pointed star that bears her name was visible in the sky as Venus, the first light at dawn and the last at dusk. The Sumerians called her the Morning Star. The Ring and Rod she carries in Sumerian reliefs represent the authority to measure and to rule; the lions that flank her gates represent the kind of power that does not need to announce itself; and the date palm is the tree that sustained entire civilizations in the Mesopotamian basin, abundance made visible.
This dress carries all four symbols in a single print. The white ground and blue palette give it the quality of hand-painted porcelain, and the gold accents warm the composition, so it reads rich in any light. The linen-cotton blend softens with every wear, the side zipper is a small detail that changes how the dress feels the moment you put it on, and the print is original enough that the story it carries belongs to you and no one else in the room.
