Symbolism and Craft

Inanna governed love, war, and political authority in ancient Sumer, and she did not separate them. The lions that guard her gates represent power, and the roses reference the offerings left at her temples. The eight-pointed stars are her celestial signature, visible as Venus in the sky.
And the vulva that repeats across the background of this print is the symbol found on cylinder seals and temple walls dating back to 3000 BCE, representing Inanna's dominion over desire, fertility, and sovereignty over the body. The poet Enheduanna, the first named author in recorded history, wrote hymns to Inanna that celebrated this.

The satin finish on the cotton catches candlelight and low evening light in a way that makes the fabric shift between deep red and dark depending on where you are standing.

Inanna's Seven Gates is made from 100% cotton in a sateen weave. The weave gives the cotton a soft sheen that catches light without looking glossy, so the deep wine color and the red print have a richness that works especially well in the evening. Underneath the finish, it is still cotton, which keeps the dress breathable and comfortable on a hot afternoon in a city like Cartagena.

The top of the dress is structured. Wide straight straps and the shaped neckline frame the shoulders and collarbone. The fitted section continues through the waist and over the hips before opening into a gathered skirt, which gives the dress a defined shape without making it difficult to move in. Lions and rosettes appear repeatedly in Mesopotamian imagery associated with her, and the eight pointed star became one of the clearest signs of Inanna and, later, Ishtar as the planet Venus.

Those symbols became the starting point for Diva Thea’s original Inanna print. The lions refer to her power and martial character. The rosettes and stars come from her established visual language in Mesopotamian art.
The repeated vulval form in the background is our own interpretation of another part of Inanna that the surviving literature makes impossible to ignore: sexuality, fertility, and female desire are explicit parts of her mythology.

Sumerian love poetry associated with Inanna can be remarkably direct about the body and sexual desire, and her relationship with Dumuzid connects sexuality with fertility, prosperity, and kingship. Enheduanna, the earliest named author known to history, also wrote extensively in praise of Inanna, presenting her as a goddess of extraordinary political, martial, and cosmic authority.

All of that sits inside what first appears to be a beautiful bordeaux, deep red-wine print. The cotton sateen adds another layer in person. Its soft surface catches candlelight and low evening light, so the wine color can appear richer or darker depending on where the dress is standing in the room.
