In the Prose Edda, when Freya's lover Óðr vanished, her tears fell as gold on the earth and hardened to amber in the sea. Grief transformed into something precious and permanent. The deep midnight blue ground anchors the silhouette while copper and amber tones move through the print like candlelight caught in dark water. The effect is rich, and it draws attention on its own terms. What does the Golden Tears print represent?

The print is drawn from the Prose Edda, where Freya's tears for her lost husband Óðr are said to have fallen as gold and hardened into amber. It's an original in-house design developed for the Freya collection.

Is this dress suitable for formal occasions?

Yes. The structured halter bodice and softly flared maxi skirt are built for evenings, milestone dinners, and other occasion wear.

Does this dress have pockets?

Yes. Two discreet side pockets are integrated into the seams.

What works so well about this dress is the fabric. It is a linen and cotton blend at around 210 GSM, so it has enough weight to hold the shape of the bodice and give the skirt a beautiful, substantial fall without feeling heavy on the body.

The colors also stay rich and saturated against the blue base, which gives the print much more impact in person.

Even in Cartagena, where the weather is hot, the dress still feels comfortable because linen and cotton breathe well. She looks completely at ease waiting for her ice cream, but still very put together without having to do much at all.

During the day, it works easily with flat sandals. For dinner, switch to heels. In cooler weather or a different setting, brown boots would work beautifully too. The fabric has enough structure to carry all three.

Midnight Blue Linen & Cotton Maxi

There is more to this dress than the natural fibers it is made from. In Norse mythology, Freyja is associated with seiðr, a form of Norse magic. She also has an unusual connection to battle: in the Prose Edda, Freyja receives half of those killed in combat in her field, Fólkvangr.

Upon closer inspection, the print reveals a depiction of Freyja shedding golden tears. When her husband Óðr went away on long journeys, Freyja searched for him among unknown peoples, taking on different names as she traveled. The Prose Edda says that she wept tears of red gold for him. That story appears in the print through streams of gold falling from her eyes and turning into amber.

She is also surrounded by cats, a reference to the cats that draw her chariot in Snorri’s account. She wears the feather cloak associated with her in the Norse sources, which Loki borrows in Þrymskviða so he can fly to the land of the giants. Against the deep midnight blue ground, these stories turn what first appears to be a vibrant print into something with much more to discover.
